10 days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

10 Days 9 Nights

The 10 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular and rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal, offering an incredible combination of dramatic mountain scenery, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural encounters with the Gurung and Magar communities. This trek takes you through lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, charming traditional villages, and high alpine terrain, culminating at the foot of the majestic Annapurna massif at 4,130 meters.

Unlike treks to Everest region, the ABC trek offers a perfect balance of moderate difficulty and breathtaking rewards, making it accessible to trekkers with reasonable fitness levels while still delivering close-up views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Annapurna I (8,091m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South.

  • Spring (March-May): Excellent for rhododendron blooms that paint the hillsides in vibrant red, pink, and white, along with good visibility
  • Winter (December-February): Colder temperatures and possible snowfall at higher elevations, but fewer crowds and clear skies on good days
  • Monsoon (June-August): Not recommended due to heavy rainfall, leech-infested trails, and obscured mountain views, though possible for experienced trekkers seeking solitude

What Makes Annapurna Base Camp Trek Special?

The ABC trek is special because it offers one of the most diverse trekking experiences in Nepal within a relatively short timeframe. Trekkers pass through multiple ecological zones, from subtropical forests and cascading waterfalls to alpine meadows and glacial moraines, all while being surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks.

The trek culminates in a dramatic amphitheater of mountains at Annapurna Base Camp, where Annapurna I and Machhapuchhre rise dramatically on either side. Along the way, trekkers experience authentic Gurung and Magar village life, visit natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda, and enjoy warm hospitality at teahouses. The combination of accessible difficulty, stunning Himalayan panoramas, and cultural immersion makes this trek a favorite among first-time and experienced trekkers alike.

How Difficult Is 10 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

This trek is rated as moderate in difficulty, suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and some prior hiking experience, though it is achievable for determined beginners with proper preparation. Key difficulty factors include:

  • Daily walking durations of 5-7 hours on varied terrain including stone steps, forest trails, and rocky paths
  • Steep ascents and descents, particularly between Chhomrong and Bamboo, and the final push to ABC
  • Maximum altitude of 4,130m, which requires gradual acclimatization but is below the threshold for severe altitude concerns
  • Variable weather conditions, especially at higher elevations
  • Long stone staircases that can be physically demanding on the knees, particularly during descents

With good physical preparation, a positive attitude, and proper pacing, most healthy individuals can successfully complete this trek.

Permits Required for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Two permits are mandatory for this trek:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required for entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area, this permit supports conservation efforts and local community development
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System): A mandatory permit that helps track trekker information for safety and statistical purposes

Both permits are typically arranged by the trekking agency on your behalf and are included in the package cost. Trekkers will need to provide passport-sized photographs and passport details for permit processing.

Safety, Training & Preparation

While no technical climbing skills are required, proper preparation significantly enhances the trekking experience:

  • Physical Training: Begin cardiovascular training (hiking, jogging, stair climbing) at least 4-6 weeks before the trek
  • Practice Hikes: Undertake practice hikes with a loaded backpack to build endurance
  • Pre-Trek Health Check: A medical check-up is recommended, especially for those with pre-existing heart, lung, or joint conditions
  • Guides and Porters: Experienced, licensed guides accompany all groups, trained in first aid and altitude sickness recognition
  • Emergency Protocols: All guides carry first-aid kits, and emergency evacuation procedures are in place should any issues arise
  • Communication Devices: Guides carry means of communication for emergencies even in areas with limited network coverage

Mountain Views

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers some of the most spectacular and close-up mountain views in the Himalayas:

  • Annapurna I (8,091m): The 10th highest mountain in the world, towering directly above the base camp
  • Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m): A sacred and visually striking peak resembling a fish’s tail, visible throughout much of the trek
  • Annapurna South (7,219m) and Hiunchuli (6,441m): Dominating the skyline near base camp
  • Gangapurna (7,455m) and Annapurna III (7,555m): Visible from various points along the trail
  • Panoramic sunrise and sunset views from Poon Hill (optional extension) and base camp itself, where the surrounding peaks glow in shades of gold and pink

Altitude Sickness and Prevention

Although Annapurna Base Camp’s elevation of 4,130m is lower than many other trekking destinations in Nepal, altitude sickness remains a consideration that should be taken seriously:

  • The itinerary is designed with gradual ascent profiles to allow for natural acclimatization
  • Trekkers should stay well-hydrated (3-4 liters of water daily) and avoid alcohol and smoking during the trek
  • Common symptoms of mild altitude sickness include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue
  • Walking at a slow, steady pace (“bistari, bistari”) helps the body adjust naturally
  • Guides are trained to recognize symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and will make decisions regarding descent if necessary
  • Diamox (acetazolamide) can be carried as a preventive measure, but should be discussed with a doctor beforehand
  • In case of severe symptoms, immediate descent is the most effective treatment, and emergency evacuation procedures are available

Internet Access and Mobile Network in the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Connectivity along the ABC trekking route is reasonably good compared to more remote regions of Nepal:

  • Mobile Network: NTC and Ncell provide coverage in most lower villages, though signal may weaken or disappear at higher elevations near base camp
  • Wi-Fi: Most teahouses and lodges offer Wi-Fi for a small fee (typically NPR 200-500 per device), though speeds may be slow and connections unreliable at higher altitudes
  • Power Charging: Charging stations are available at lodges, often with a small fee, especially at higher elevations where electricity may be solar-powered
  • It’s recommended to purchase a local SIM card with data in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting the trek for backup connectivity

This early morning ascent is one of the most iconic and unforgettable highlights of the entire Annapurna trekking experience.

As you reach the top of Poon Hill, witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in the entire Himalayas, as the first golden rays of dawn gradually illuminate the towering snow-capped peaks surrounding you. The trail begins with a descent through thick rhododendron and bamboo forests, offering peaceful and shaded walking conditions as you make your way down toward the Modi Khola river valley. The path winds through several small hamlets and tea houses, passing through Gurjung, where you can stop for refreshments and enjoy views of the surrounding forested hills and distant mountain peaks.

From Gurjung, the trail continues to descend before eventually crossing a suspension bridge over a mountain stream and then ascending steeply toward Chhomrong. This final uphill climb can be quite challenging, involving a long series of stone steps, but the reward is well worth the effort as you are greeted with some of the most magnificent views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre directly ahead.

Upon arriving in Chhomrong, check in to your teahouse and take some time to rest and explore this vibrant hillside village, with its well-maintained stone pathways, local shops, bakeries, and friendly residents. Today's journey takes you through some of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes of the entire trek, as the towering walls of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre massifs close in around you, creating a breathtaking natural amphitheater.

The trail begins with a steep descent down a long series of stone steps from Chhomrong toward the Chhomrong Khola river below. Your guide will ensure your safety and provide information about the terrain and surrounding peaks as you make your way through this magnificent natural corridor.

The trail passes through Himalaya and continues toward Hinku Cave, a natural rock shelter that has served as a resting place for trekkers and mountaineers for generations, before reaching Deurali, a small tea house settlement where you can stop for refreshments and take in the increasingly dramatic mountain scenery surrounding you.

From Deurali, the trail enters the upper Annapurna Sanctuary, a sacred glacial basin completely encircled by some of the world's most magnificent and imposing Himalayan peaks. The path follows the Modi Khola river upstream, crossing glacial moraines and rocky terrain as the towering walls of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Annapurna III, and the iconic spire of Machhapuchhre rise dramatically on all sides, creating an overwhelming sense of being completely surrounded by the might and majesty of the Himalayas.

Continue climbing steadily through Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) at 3,700 meters, an ideal spot to pause, catch your breath, take photographs, and acclimatize briefly before tackling the final section of the ascent to Annapurna Base Camp.
